As a mom of two young boys, I found myself frustrated by the limited choices in boys’ apparel. Every trip to the store offered the same predictable options: loud primary colors and endless graphics limited to themes like video gaming, monster trucks and football. But if your boys are anything like mine, they have a multitude of other interests that are not represented on the clothes supposedly made for them—reinforcing the same narrow idea of what boys are supposed to like and who they are supposed to be.
I tried rounding out my boys' wardrobe with items marketed as girls' apparel. And while girls' apparel offered more variety in terms of colors, themes and positive messaging, most of it came with frills, bows, and form-fitting cuts beyond the toddler sizes—not-so subtly shaping a different set of expectations.
I started Ursa + Leo because I believe clothing should empower kids to be their authentic selves. Our brand is built on the idea that both boys and girls deserve to have a broader range of options to express themselves through what they wear—without outdated gender norms dictating their choices—because the options they see show them who they can be.
All the things boys love should exist on their clothing and not all t-shirts made for girls over the age of 5 need capped sleeves and a tailored waistline. Both boys and girls deserve to have clothing options that reflect the full spectrum of colors, themes, and positive messages. Whether it’s blue, pink or rainbow, every child should have the freedom to wear the colors they love. Whether they love dinosaurs or unicorns, every child should feel free to express that
interest through what they wear.
Before society puts our kids in a box, we should let them explore, discover, and
